Pompeii in the middle of Bavaria

Be enchanted by the grace and pride of this replica of a Roman house in Pompeii. King Ludwig I had it built high above the River Main between 1840 and 1848. Since 1994 - after several phases of restoration - Roman works of art from the Munich State Collection of Antiquities and Glyptothek have been on display here.

Embark on a very special journey through time that also takes you to a world beyond the Alps. The first impression is not exactly typically Bavarian: the Pompejanum is surrounded by warmth-loving trees such as figs, araucarias, almond trees, vines, poplars and pines. A stroll through the garden is a delight for all the senses, especially in spring and summer.

The excavations in Pompeii once provided the inspiration for the construction of the house. The reception and guest rooms, kitchen and dining rooms are arranged on the first floor around two inner courtyards, the atrium with its water basin and the green Viridarium at the rear of the house. Real eye-catchers are the paintings in the interior rooms and the mosaic floors, which are based on antique models and consist of an almost infinite number of small puzzle pieces.
